The broken car

While we were out Owen insisted on having a picture with "a broken car".

A visit to the big machines down the road

Owen loves the diggers, scoops and cranky cranes that are around almost every corner in Doha. So today after church Owen and I drove around and found a couple of scoops that he was keen to get up close to. After climbing on the sand hills and touching the steel of the machines he was satisfied with seeing "the big noisy machines" and then we headed off to Aspire Park to see the ducks.

Owen's Nursery Concert Preparation for the big day has been going on for the last few weeks. Owen was sent home with song words and we practiced these almost every day. Today went off so well and even though the concert was only half an hour it was a well put together production! Owen's part in it was to the song "Here we go round the Christmas tree" which is the same tune as "Here we go round the mulberry bush". He was dressed in his favourite green colour, got down on the boogie woogie song and on the odd occassion got distracted and picked his nose. What can one expect from a 4 year old? We are very proud parents.

Owen visits the Paediatric Emergency Centre

On Thursday I fetched Owen at 9am from school with a fever and feeling poorly. He was looking off the next day and then developed croup. I took him to the PEC at 9pm Saturday night as he could not sleep and breath properly. He had a shot in his leg (followed by much protesting) and then we stayed for 4 hours while he was hooked up to a monitor and nebulised. After he felt better he was happy to pose for some photos. Brendon was away in Europe so Owen slept in my bed for 5 days. I also learnt that he grinds his teeth loud enough to wake me up. I think this will be the next investigation. Always something going on with little ones. I have been very pleased not to have to do the school run though.

Owens first day at School

Today was Owens first day at school. He is in the Buttercup Nursery class. He has a uniform which he does not mind wearing but has let me know on previous occassions that he does not like the shorts. I tend to agree with him (but never verbally let him know) that they are not what I would personally pick out for him to wear.

Our week leading up to today was filled with introducing what will be taking place at school etc. First we drew up a calendar and Owen crossed off the days until we got to the smiley "school" day. Next we had the snack out of the "incy wincy spider" snack pack at 10am to let him know that is what we eat first and at lunch time the dinosaur lunch bag held his lunch time meal. All seemed to work fine at home.

The weekend before was spent trying to convince Owen that his black school shoes were cool to wear. He needed a bit of convincing but didnt hesitate to put them on once he saw that his socks were his favourite colour green! Bonus.

The night before everything was laid out and ready for the next days action. I battled to sleep but Owen didnt have a problem! Owen was so excited in the morning he even managed to put most of his uniform on himself. Brendon came with us to mark this historic event. When we arrived Owen shot into the class and settled himself down in front of the car garage and was very happy to say goodbye. I on the other hand was a bit teary and when Erin and I got home I decided the girls needed chocolate so I split a box of Owens mini-smarties box with Erin at 8.00am.

I am hoping the days and months to come will be just as happy and as exciting as it was today for my little boy.

Building is my thing

Owen loves to build things with his lego. His creation today was a helicopter. He has such imagination as I definately would not have thought up this one.

Owen gets a black eye

As it usually happens when Brendon is away someone acquires an injury here at home. Owen managed to catch his eye on the corner of the play table in his room just before bath time. He cried so and wouldn't let me open it, all the while blood streaming down his face. I phoned the compound paramedic which is Brendons colleague and he responded down Salwa road in 5 minutes! It turned out to be a small cut and it stopped bleeding after a while. No hospital visits thank goodness.

Summer School

Owen is attending summer school 3 mornings in the week at Busy Bees for the month of July. It is a relaxed fun time with softplay, kitchen time, waterplay, crafting and eating and the list goes on. Today he arrived home with a painted face and insisted on sitting on their little table actiing like a cat, meowing all the while. Erin was very amused.

End of Playball Party

Owen has been attending PlayBall for the last 4 weeks. It is now over for the summer and starts again in September. Playball is a multi-skill sports programme which follows the progression from basic fundamental sports skills to mini games of tennis, hockey, football, basketball and baseball. There are about 6 children in each group and we gather at a place called Garvey's not far from our house. Owen enjoys ball games and is good at throwing straight and loves playing hockey. He doesnt like to kick the ball but would rather throw it up into the air or at someone. He loves the stimulation and I am sure will be happy to start again after his summer holiday.

Owen the Photographer

Owen has been running around with his Thomas camera taking pretend photos. Today I let him take a picture using my camera. He loved it and wanted to shoot everything. He is always very interested in seeing the pictures after they have been taken and even poses for photos nowdays.

Graduation Day

Owen had his graduation from Busy Bees Nursery today. All children who leave to go to the main stream schools here in Doha are involved in this event. Apparently there is a lot of work that goes into getting them to perform in front of the parents. Apart from the odd over achiever, who sang all the songs, most were overwhelmed by the paparazzi parents standing in front of them and the children couldn't do anything except stare at them like zombies. Owen sat next to a little boy who constantly held or wanted to hold his hand. Owen is distracted most times so to get some of the activities right was a big achievement for him. He received a certificate at the end of the graduation. His teacher is the lady in the white pants. She is from Scotland. Before the event started Erin was very busy scratching around in another childs bag and checking up on the baby that was sleeping on the desk.

School Party

It is half term and Owen had a dress up party at school. He decided he wanted to be a knight so chose the helmet, cape and shield for the event. We baked and decorated the cupcakes the night before. This was his contribution to the party food. On arrival at school he discovered there was a jumping castle outside so he was very excited. He had a really fun day and when I picked him up he was still talking about the jumping castle.

Sports Day

Two classes from Owens nursery had a sports day at Aspire park. Two buses had been hired to take the children from the school to the event. Brendon drove Owen there as we were not happy about the driving skills here in Doha and also the buses don't have seat belts. Parents were invited but I felt that it hindered the childrens performance as they were clingy when they should have been having fun with their class mates. Owen enjoyed the egg and spoon race the most. There was also a relay race with a bean bag. Unfortunately Brendon took Erin for a walk with my camera so I was unable to capture the moments. After the activities lunch was delivered by "Burger King" and co-ordinated by the nursery staff. Miss Shiela in the pink pants is Owens teachers assistants and takes care of him like her own. They all sat around on the grass and ate. Then it was home time.

Incy Wincy Tarantula

Today I went to pick Owen up from school. When I entered the classroom I noticed the childrens faces were painted with different designs. Owens friend had a nice spiders web with a small spider on it, another had a butterfly and another a tiger. Owen turned around and to my horror had a huge spider on his forehead. Spiders are my worst goga's! On the drive home I contemplated how to wipe it off his face without too much of a meltdown on his part. I didnt think I would manage the day having to look it. He insisted on looking in the bathroom mirror every 5 mins to check how, in his words, "cool" it was. I only managed to convince him at the end of the day that it was smudged and messy and I would re-draw another incy wincy which was exactly what I did. He was very excited but not too impressed that it was so small!

Potty Training

Since Erins birth we have tried to encourage Owen that the toilet is a better place to go than in his nappy but he was having none of it. I thought that if I had a focus on him that he would feel special too seeing that his limelight had to be shared with a sister now. Last week he went through 3 pairs of underpants all before 9am! This week with the help of the nursery he finds it very rewarding to sit on the potty and do his thing. I know that the nursery is a big influence because now he finds using the toilet (and not the potty) and urinating like daddy a big hit. Normally this activity takes place in the bathroom but Owen was adamant that he could not miss his favourite programe "Timmy Time". It's not without it's accidents and cleaning poo out of his underpants is really not my thing. Let's hope it is a quick and puke-free experience, for me at least.
